A personal statement from Kenji Goto's wife, Rinko.

My family and I are devastated by the news of Kenji’s death. He was not just my loving husband and father to our two beautiful children, but a son, brother and friend to many around the world.

While feeling a great personal loss, I remain extremely proud of my husband who reported the plight of people in conflict areas like Iraq, Somalia and Syria.
It was his passion to highlight the effects on ordinary people, especially through the eyes of children, and to inform the rest of us of the tragedies of war.

I would like to thank everyone who has offered their support to myself and our family over these last difficult few months.

As you can imagine this is an extremely difficult time for our family. I would ask that the media please respect our privacy and allow us time to come to terms with our loss.

Rinko

Remembering Kenji Goto

Sunday, 01 February 2015 Written by Tina Carr

The Japanese freelancer, who has been killed by Islamic State, was committed to covering humanitarian issues and the stories of ordinary people caught up in conflict.

We are horrified and deeply saddened by the killing of freelancer Kenji Goto by Islamic State.

Kenji, 47, was an experienced and respected journalist - one of the very few freelancers working in Japan.  He had covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Albania, Chechnya, Iraq, Liberia and Sierra Leone before travelling to Syria.  In 1996 Kenji set up the news agency Independent Press which focused on the coverage of humanitarian issues and ordinary people - especially children - caught up in conflict.  In addition to his reporting, he made documentaries that aired on NHK and Asahi TV, and authored several books.

Kenji was well known to us at the Trust – a friend and supporter of our work and a regular entrant to the Rory Peck Awards.  His death is a huge loss to everyone who knew him. What his family has been through is unimaginable and we hope that everyone will respect their privacy.

Kenji Goto is the third international freelance journalist to be executed by Islamic State.
